Five bank employees rescued after hostage incident in Izmir
Turkish police ended a hostage incident at a bank in Izmir's Karabaglar district by persuading the suspect to surrender.
Turkish police rescued five employees held hostage at a bank branch in Izmir's Karabaglar district and detained the suspect. The incident ended without reported injuries after negotiations by security teams.
Prosecutors said the suspect entered the branch on Inonu Avenue at about 4:30 p.m., took a private security guard's weapon and held five bank employees inside.
Police deployed numerous teams, established a wide security perimeter and closed the avenue to traffic in both directions. Specialist officers then opened negotiations with the suspect.
The talks persuaded him to surrender, allowing all five employees to be freed. Initial information indicated that he had previously received psychiatric treatment and was not carrying a weapon when the incident ended; prosecutors are investigating the circumstances.
