Rubio threatens the International Criminal Court: "You will see America's power" and calls for shutting it down as rights group responds
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio launched a fierce attack on the International Criminal Court, saying it threatens the American political and legal system and targets US border patrol officers and Marines, while a former Human Rights Watch official accused Rubio of seeking to shield American war crimes under the cover of national sovereignty.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio launched a sharp attack on the International Criminal Court, describing it as a harmful force against US sovereignty and calling for it to be shut down.
Rubio said: "Today it threatens every aspect of our political and legal system. It also targets border patrol officers who deport violent criminals from our country, and it targets American Marines who risked their lives defending our homeland."
Kenneth Roth, the former executive director of Human Rights Watch, responded in comments to CNN International, saying: "The International Criminal Court does not claim any jurisdiction over acts inside the United States."
Another official added: "Rubio is trying to conceal his effort to secure impunity for American war crimes under the cover of national sovereignty, and this ignores other countries' right to turn to the International Criminal Court over crimes committed on their territory."
