Greece raises the forest fire alert to orange level on several islands
Greek authorities raised the level of forest fire risk to the orange stage on the islands of Crete, Chios, Samos and Ikaria, with a yellow warning in and around Athens and several other areas, and called on residents to avoid any activity that might cause fires to break out.
The Greek General Secretariat of Civil Protection raised the danger level of forest fires to the orange stage, which is the second highest alert level, on the islands of Crete, Chios, Samos and Ikaria.
The yellow warning areas (the lowest degree of orange) include the capital Athens and its environs in the Attica region, the north of the Morea Peninsula, the islands of Evia and Medilli, and the Kilkis region in the north.
The General Secretariat called on residents of high-risk areas to avoid burning dry grass and using welding machines. Lighting grills in open spaces to avoid fires.
