The Istanbul Stock Exchange closed 2.12% lower amid escalating tension in the Middle East
The main Istanbul Stock Exchange index closed down 2.12%, affected by the escalation of geopolitical tension in the Middle East and Trump’s announcement of the end of the truce with Iran, while the International Monetary Fund lowered global growth expectations.
The “BIST 100” index on the Istanbul Stock Exchange closed trading on Wednesday, down by 2.12%, at the level of 14,189.96 points, a decline of 307.42 points from the previous close, with a total trading volume of 200.8 billion Turkish liras.
The banking index declined by 3.25%, and the holding companies index by 1.90%, while the transportation sector was the most affected. With a decrease of 4.38%, while the information technology sector was the only sector that recorded a slight increase of 0.30%.
Analysts attributed the deepening wave of selling to US President Donald Trump’s announcement of the end of the truce with Iran and his messages regarding a possible new attack, which led to an escalation of geopolitical risks in the Middle East and a decline in risk appetite in global markets.
On the other hand, the final statement of the 36th NATO Summit of States and Governments held in Ankara, which announced the allies’ agreement on new defense arms deals worth more than $50 billion, and their commitment to enhancing cooperation in increasing joint production capacity.
For its part, the International Monetary Fund lowered its global economic growth forecast for this year from 3.1% to 3%, expecting the Turkish economy to grow by 2.9% in 2026 and 3.6% in 2027.
The markets are awaiting the minutes of the US Federal Reserve meeting this evening, amid follow-up data.Chinese inflation and US unemployment claims.
