China achieves a global achievement with the first missile that is caught in the air with a net instead of landing legs
China successfully tested a reusable Long March 10B rocket, with its first stage captured in the air by a cable and net system on a floating platform, in a world-first achievement that brings Beijing a step closer to competing with the US SpaceX dominance in the space launch market.
China launched a Long March 10B rocket from Hainan Island in the south of the country, and succeeded in testing a new technology for reusing rockets.
About 6 minutes after the first stage separated from the upper stage of the rocket, the first stage landed vertically on a floating platform in the sea, where it was picked up by a cable and net system on the platform, which led to a controlled and smooth landing.
This method is completely different from the landing leg system used by the owned company SpaceX. For American businessman Elon Musk, this is the first global success in capturing a rocket in the air using a grid system.
The Chinese Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation, which developed the rocket, described this mission as a “historic achievement” that will accelerate the country’s ability to access space. The mission also succeeded in successfully placing a satellite in orbit.
