The latest data from the Ministry of Health in the Democratic Republic of the Congo showed that the number of confirmed cases of Ebola virus has risen to 1,792 cases, and the death toll to 625 cases.
764 patients are currently undergoing isolation or treatment in hospitals, while 295 people have recovered so far. The outbreak of the virus is still active in the provinces of Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu.
Congolese Health Minister Roger Campa said that the Ebola outbreak is still in a very active phase, adding that it is currently not possible to predict when infections will peak. He explained that population density and intense human movement, in addition to the difficulty of local communities participating in response efforts, make it difficult to combat the outbreak.
The authorities declared the outbreak of the epidemic on May 15 after detecting 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths in the eastern province of Ituri, and the World Health Organization declared an international public health emergency due to the Ebola outbreak on May 17.
According to health officials, the current outbreak is caused by a rare strain of the virus known as Known as the Bundibugyo virus, it is a strain that does not yet have an approved treatment or vaccine, and it causes a type of hemorrhagic fever. The Ebola virus was first discovered in 1976 in Sudan.
