Apple is suing OpenAI for stealing trade secrets from former engineers
Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, one of its most prominent competitors in the artificial intelligence race, accusing it of stealing trade secrets and confidential engineering data for products that have not yet been launched, through former employees who moved to work for the competing company, while OpenAI denied the accusations.
The technology industry is witnessing a major legal battle in the midst of the race to dominate the artificial intelligence market, after Apple filed a lawsuit in the Northern District Court of California against OpenAI.
Apple alleges in the lawsuit that OpenAI illegally acquired confidential trade secrets and new-generation device designs, and used them in artificial intelligence device projects developed by the competing company and expected to be revealed this year. Apple is basing its lawsuit on two counts of misuse of trade secrets and breach of contracts.
Apple's accusations center around former employees who recently joined the ranks of OpenAI. The company alleges that engineer Zhang Liu, who left Apple in January 2026 to join OpenAI, did not restore the company's computers and, through his former colleague's computer, downloaded dozens of confidential files related to unreleased Apple products, along with engineering demos and technical data.
The lawsuit includes another prominent name, Tang Tan, the former lead of iPhone and Apple Watch design at Apple, who currently serves as head of the hardware division at OpenAI.
